about

The seed of this song came in response to answered prayer – after one of the many times we asked God for, and received exactly what we needed in a miraculous way that only God can orchestrate.

Many times in life, God brings us to places where we absolutely have to trust His provision. The truth is that this is always reality, and God reminds us of it from time to time. All good things we have come from God – always. And yet we tend to want to grasp at things as if they are our own. We have such a tendency to doubt God’s ability to provide. But when God brings us to these places where we have no choice, no strength of our own to ‘manufacture’ what we need, then He is able to remind us of His power and character and the truth about how He knows and provides just what we need at just the right time.

If we can grasp more and more how generous God is by His very nature, then we will doubt Him less and less. In one of his books, Tim Keller describes ‘grace’ as ‘God’s overwhelming generosity’. Truly God gives grace upon grace – He is overwhelmingly generous to us. I have a theory that our inability to understand God’s overwhelming generousity leads to selfishness, a sense of entitlement, ingratitude, reluctance to respond to the needs around us, and ignoring the Spirit’s promptings to give freely. Oh, if we could grasp how truly generous God is! And oh that His generous character would be reflected in us!

lyrics

Generous God
Giving grace upon grace
Love upon love
Strength upon strength

Thank You
We want to thank You
We want to thank You
Generous God

You bring new life, You open doors
You shine Your light and You restore
Joy and peace and hope and faith
Patiently You show the way

Father, Holy Spirit, Son,
The deep, mysterious only One
You make Your glorious presence felt
And You pour out Yourself
