about

I was reading through the first five books of the Old Testament (the Pentateuch) aloud with a friend, and we were both really struck by how active God’s Spirit was from the very beginning of the Bible right through to the end. We were under the impression for some reason that God’s people did not experience God’s Spirit until after Pentecost. And yet God’s Spirit is present at creation, fills and gifts individuals in ways that are obvious to others, and is present in fire, cloud, and glory to lead and protect throughout the Old Testament.

Of course, something amazing did happen at Pentecost when the Spirit is poured out upon so many at once and promised to all who believe in Jesus. I was reflecting on this and thanking God for His Holy Spirit which He gives to His children. In my bedtime prayers that night I poured out thanksgiving to God for His Spirit.

In the middle of the night, I was woken from sleep and God gave me this song. This had never happened to me before, and I grabbed my phone and pressed record and tried to sing very quietly to not wake up my husband. I did wake him up though. At first he thought he was dreaming, but when he realised I was singing he got up to tell me to come back to bed. When I told him that I was singing because God was giving me a song, he had no argument and was supportive and encouraging despite it being 3am. The next day I had a music practice for college chapel, and one of the musicians was running late. I asked if I could share the song with the team while we waited – and not only were they supportive, they helped arrange the song and decided we should sing it at the next chapel service at the Bible college. This was right before Pentecost, so I also shared the song with the church worship team the next Saturday and we sung it in church on Pentecost Sunday. This was an added blessing because we were having difficulty finding songs about the Holy Spirit for the service.

This song expresses my absolute gratitude for how I see the Spirit working throughout the Scriptures from creation to new creation. It also reflects the prayer of my heart that God’s Spirit will fill His church to truly make Christ known throughout the world in word and deed. May God indeed set apart His people and impassion them to love with peace and justice until all know Christ as Lord.

lyrics

The Spirit of God
Hovers over the darkness
Brings the dawn of creation
Sends the Word of light
Breathes the gift of life
The Spirit of God
Thunders grace and holiness
Emboldens victorious
Whispers covenant
Inspires beauty

Fire of God draw us anew
Fill us with passion worthy of you
Love through us with peace and justice
That all may know
Fire of God draw us anew
Fill us with passion worthy of you
Cleanse our hearts, set us apart
That all may know
You are Lord

The Spirit of God
Makes a way through the waters
Leads through the wilderness
Protects from harm
And guides safely home
The Spirit of God
Breaks the chains of the captives
Gives hope to poor and suffering
Opens eyes to see
Christ brings unity

Fire of God draw us anew
Fill us with passion worthy of you
Love through us with peace and justice
That all may know
Fire of God draw us anew
Fill us with passion worthy of you
Cleanse our hearts, set us apart
That all may know
You are Lord

The Spirit of God
Comforts the persecuted
Takes up the cross and follows
Shares with sacrifice
Raises us with Christ
The Spirit of God
Empowers us for glory
Enlightens us with wisdom
Walks with us each day
Helps us to obey

Fire of God draw us anew
Fill us with passion worthy of you
Love through us with peace and justice
That all may know
Fire of God draw us anew
Fill us with passion worthy of you
Cleanse our hearts, set us apart
That all may know
You are Lord
